TODAY ON OWN YOUR OWN - DON'T WASTE TIME

The criticality of appropriate timing in your business and your life. It's just a charge for you to be on time and not be late in business and in life.

Life is actually a race against time. It is a contest for you and by you, against time with stakes such as success, riches, value creation, accomplishments and fulfilment.

For all of us, we get distracted once in a while by other racers, mistaking them as fellow contestants. We think were in competition against others hence, we keep running and chasing and hustling using other racers as our benchmark for success, instead of our personal dreams, goals, ambitions and visions.

I'll always say to people in seminars and trainings to think back 10 years, 20 years and even further; where are all the people we had in our lives as friends, class mates, colleagues and in general competitors? 99% of them may no longer in our lives.

Class mates in primary school, secondary school and even the universities are mostly history now, we're probably not in touch with over 90% of them. In fact 5 years after exiting the community that kept you together, you're in different worlds. Your preferences, thinking, ideologies and belief systems would have changed.

I've personally experienced situations where i looked forward to reuniting with old school mates and colleagues at work, and at the reunion, it was initially excitement and ecstasy seeing these friends after so long. Then for about 10 to 15 minutes we remind ourselves of what we used to do together, ask who and who anyone is still in touch with, ask what we're doing now. Afterwards, fatty communion! We begin to look for what to talk about- weather, politics and what else? Nothing. Apparently time has made that difference, the community that presented the platform and occasion for rivalry and competition is ended. We're in different worlds and communities now, we've all moved on in life, still running our individual races but no longer in competition with each other. Times and seasons separate competitors in the race of life.

This hence, should redirect our minds to the futility of competing with others in life. Our attention should be more on running our own race against time.

It is however quite difficult to keep running if you don't have in clear terms, your sense of direction and destination.

Where exactly are you going? What are you chasing? What are you looking for? How do you want to get there? When do you want to get there? Hmmm

Every now and again i come across people that were a part of my training or seminars held months or years ago, and I'll always ask them how far they have come since the seminar, and all I get from most are excuses and reasons for stagnation, frankly speaking they do take responsibility for their inaction though. However taking responsibility does not change the reality.

Apart from people and lack of destination mitigating your progress in life, our human frailty and weaknesses serve as deterrents as well. For instance many of us keep chasing shadows and things that don't really satisfy like money, power, attention and popularity. The fact that we find pleasure in all these should not qualify them as priority or ultimate destinations in life.

If money, power, relevance and popularity take priority over achieving the purpose of your race which is succeeding and being outstanding at what you do, you'll lose everything at the end of the day.

What do you really want to do and achieve in business? How do you really intend to use quality performance, productivity, value growth and prosperity to strengthen your business?

How do you intend to use your experience, knowledge and capacity to better the lot of the business? You see, many small business owners assume their place and role in the economy is too minute or trivial to make any significant impact on the overall Nigerian economy. Hence, they treat their businesses with despise and their potential with levity.

You see, potentially, you are a great business owner; a multibillion dollar business exists within you. To birth it out, you need to set great goals and define destinations within your journey and for your business.

You need to chart a course and set timelines for great accomplishments. Stop competing and envying other small business owners like you. Great business owners don't at the start get intimidated or distracted by what their competitors and fellow small business owners are doing or buying.

If you're making good money from your small office, you don't need a bigger office just because a fellow small business owner does. If you don't need official cars, don't go investing in cars if it's not critical to your business at this time.

Business management is not an act you carry out because of other players all around you.

You must set big dreams and goals and remain focused on what you're about ad where you're going.

Do you know every kind of business including carpentry, hair dressing; dress making and catering can make anyone a multi billionaire?

It's about what you see, envision and the ability to stay focused on your dreams and goals.

Remaining small because people in these kind of businesses keep it small is not a smart thing to do.

Do something with yours to make your kind of business attractive and enviable as well. Think global and aim international with your business practice.

Apply your mind to your business, apply your skills; apply your energy and time. Apply your creativity and intelligence. You've probably invested too much in covetousness, envy, gossip, wasteful spending and schemes match those you envy. Aren't you tired? Why not stop the rivalry and start thinking. Focus on your business and ambition. Bring beauty and create fun in your business and your service to customers, make it enviable, make people jealous of your output by staying focused on what you do and continuous improvement.

My friend, you're running out of time, this is the time to make the mark, pause and think! This is the time to take your business to its greatest heights. Give it your all, invest every ounce of energy and momentum in your blast off. Concentrate your energy. You don't have so much time, stay focused, time is running out.

Listen, there's always a season in everyone's business when you peak; when you're at your height in knowledge, skills, ability, capacity, versatility and relevance. It's a season when hard work is more like second nature to you; you achieve results like that and deliver great feats seamlessly without sweat. Your knowledge on of the business, the sector and industry is so deep, you work for hours without fatigue, motivation is natural, you're on the go, delivering excellence again and again and you're just firing on all gas. This season comes to everyone.

When you focus on your own race, doing your business sincerely, passionately and diligently, this season will appear faster and can be sustained for a very long time. If however, you're distracted by others, by vain things and the errors of the people in government, it might take a while for you to enter this zone and when you eventually enter. If you ever enter, you'll burn out faster. You won't be able to sustain it long enough.

Get a grip on yourself, let go of those unnecessary weights and distractions. Go for gold as quickly as you can and remain on top for a long time.
