TODAY ON OWN YOUR OWN - YOUR BUSINESS MUST HAVE A PURPOSE

A popular basis for starting a business especially in Africa today is for income and survival reasons. We go into business basically to make money, pay bills, sustain ourselves and our families and enjoy a life of comfort.

Half a century ago, this may make socio-economic sense but in today's world, there is more to business than just making money. The world today has become a very exciting and complex system. If your sole motive for starting any business is just to make money to pay your bills, you'll soon run out of business and become a victim of this modern system.

You see, global interactive and relationship methods have changed remarkably such that anyone can access any product in the world and pay for it immediately thanks to the invention and development of ICT. Competition therefore is not just about the shop next door, it has become global.

Which implies your ability to start, grow and manage your business successfully is beyond just supplying goods and services, it's about satisfying your customers and keeping them loyal to you and your brand – giving them no reason to shift to competitors either home or abroad.

Hence superior products, superior performance, superior customer service and innovation have become critical to business survival.

Many of us today are struggling with our lives, our businesses our finances and comfort. We go from day to day struggling to make ends meet. We live in fear of what tomorrow holds, we work very hard yet, can't seem to apprehend the purpose of the hard work.

Many who can't explain why this is so tend to blame it on the environment, we look for reasons and excuses within our socioeconomic landscape to justify our lack of good success. We hardly see ourselves as the problem, we believe it's an environmental challenge.

But facing facts, if we really want to check this, you'd realise there are many people doing pretty well in legitimate businesses within this same environment and there are many people also, struggling to afford even basic needs in other socioeconomic environments we believe are superior. With this reality check, there might be suggestions that business success may actually be something that is found well beyond the environment.

I believe business success is an individual thing, it is an outcome of personal education, information, capacity, intelligence and working smart.

You see, a major setback for most of us is the setting of our minds. Way back when we were much younger, our minds were not appropriately set by those that influenced and nurtured us regarding the concept of purpose. Most of us were not raised and nurtured to succeed in life, we were raised, trained, nurtured and re-designed to survive.

That's why many of us today wrongly think success is money simply because money is a key survival instrument. Dear friend, Success has quite little to do with your bank balance.

The reality is for many of us, our everyday thinking, motive and purpose for venturing into anything productive is survival, we daily hanker for physical and social security. Most of us were not raised to do anything because we want to succeed at it, we were raised to do things because we want to feed and gain and survive through it.

Many parents, teachers, guardians, mentors, even spiritual leaders and entertainers wired into our minds a wrong motive for our various pursuits in life. We were told to do well at all we do in order to gather much and enjoy material abundance.

Most of us today have that takers mentality, we just want to gather and accumulate; we lack a builder's mentality. We hardly want to build, we only want to take and gather as much as we can for ourselves. We were constantly told to work for gains not for growth. This mind-set unfortunately is perhaps the number one cause of business failure in Nigeria.

We venture into business to feed from it and secure ourselves from it, not because we really want to build a beautiful and successful enterprise with not just local but global relevance – employing thousands of people and adding great value to our world. We do business to survive not to succeed. That's why many of us fail in business.

Many years ago in Nigeria, it was possible to give up schooling for trading and be successful at it. These days my dear friend, you can't succeed in business without enough schooling and basic education.

Business today has changed tremendously, it is no longer easy for the uneducated. No matter the size of the business, you need a level of schooling not just to start but to effectively manage and grow any business in today's Nigeria.

Lack of enough education and enlightenment is perhaps the reason many hitherto, thriving small and medium scale businesses are failing today.

Many know they are failing in business because they don't know what to do and they lack modern skills, techniques and capacities for business success. After all, other business owners in Nigeria are succeeding at the same business that they are failing at, they however don't want to take the blame hence, find it more convenient blaming the government and lack of contemporary infrastructure.

Many foreign companies and expatriates are creating wealth and building solid business empires in Nigeria, unfortunately, many citizens are just complaining, lamenting and playing the blame game. Capacity, know-how and mind-set makes the difference.

Dear friend, change your mind set about business, change your attitude to business, the business world is changing, you need to change too to stay in business, operate locally but think global, that's the winning way in today's business world.

To effectively grow your business, you must:

Determine a purpose for that business. Why do you want to participate in the business? If it's just to make money, you've missed it already as money is never a purpose for business, it is the reward for succeeding at doing the business very well.

Secondly, learn about the business. Get an education about how the business operates globally. You need to get educated at it. You must have an understanding, know the secrets and be an authority so as to manage the dynamics and sudden changes that will someday occur.

Thirdly, you must seek the latest information, innovation and methods in the industry and quickly apply to your business. You can't afford to be behind others, innovation and trendiness is the winning edge in any industry today.

Lastly, be creative. Knowledge and deep thinking are the ingredients for creativity. Coming up with new, exciting and interesting products, services and strategies keep you ahead in your industry. You need to be creative.

Dear friend, you need a good purpose for your business to win in today's world. Define and determine your purpose today, don't just feed from your business, grow an empire.

It is time to reset your mind-set, change your attitude and do the right things.
