Though we are all human, we differ and are unique in our ways.

I believe our individual capacities, abilities and character is a function of exposure, upbringing and experience.

Depending on the circumstances of our birth, our environment and how we were raised, our strengths, energies, abilities, tenacity, endurance, perseverance, intelligence and speed of delivery vary.

For example a 6 or 7 year old boy who as a result of his family values and social status is exposed to hawking products in traffic in a city like Lagos has a higher tendency of being streetwise, more aggressive and dogged than another child, same age not exposed to such.

An orphan who makes up his mind to train himself through school; working during the holidays and in between semesters will be different in his ability and approach to managing himself, his life, finances and programme from another not exposed to such an experience.

A lot of people you meet and interact with daily today are the way they are on the account of their upbringing, exposure and experience through life.

The whole world as it were has become a global village. Nothing is that far away or so unreachable anymore thanks to the internet. New ideas, innovation, processes, concepts and activities are made easily visible and available to all through all kinds of media platforms and devices. Hence whatever new thing you bring on to your business, it’s very easy for anyone especially your competitors to see and copy. So in essence, nothing new is that new for that long anymore. Consequently to stay ahead and dominate in business, it has become necessary to come up with new ways, new strategies and ideas compelling enough to retain your customers and grow your market share.

In today’s business world, creativity and innovation is the name of the game. The most creative and most innovative business rule the market. Dear friend, creativity can be very difficult if you assume it’s only a function of deep thinking. Creativity is the ability to systematically process knowledge and information to develop something different and unique. Without information and knowledge, creativity is difficult.

SMART BUSINESS SERIES - VISION, NOT COMPETITION.

Many businesses today keep spending scarce resources unnecessarily in a bid to grow their business and dominate the market. When you spend on your business, why do you spend? Are you spending in reaction to competition or spending in line with your business vision and purpose?

Every business must have a vision, a purpose, an ambition and a destination. Your business must be controlled and directed by you not your competitors. Your competitors have indirectly taken over the management of your business if all you keep doing is reacting to what they are doing in the market and with the customer. Yes, it is wise to pay attention to what your competitors are doing and if it’s worth emulating, you give it a shot as well. But to subjugate your own business vision, mission, strategy and agenda in a bid to respond to competition in the market place will amount to wasting of resources and confusion. Not only would you eventually become confused, your team would become confused and your customers would become confused as well.

For many years I've wondered and pondered on why some people succeed in life and many others fail. I look at many people around me, I observe them and the quality of their lives and I wonder. I see many very brilliant and intelligent individuals back in their school days graduate and begin to struggle to make ends meet. And I meet so many academically average or even poor students graduate and become richer and more successful in life.

I also wonder how in the same family, siblings raised by the same parents in the same home under similar circumstances turn out different; one eventually becomes very rich and successful and the others are struggling to make ends meet.

I also observe professional colleagues, doing business in the same business environment; under the same socio-economic climate, one is super rich with so much success in the practice, the other is so poor and can hardly make ends meet.

Hence I began to realize that the core of individual success is really not about brilliance, intelligence, hard work, academic qualifications; professional certifications, type of occupation or profession;

Too many people know they are natural business men and women, many also know their life purpose is tied to managing and growing a business of their own. But year after year, procrastination has been their bane, they can't just get the ambition off the ground. Today, let's share on the mind-set that starts.

Many people today are sceptical about transiting from paid-employment to self-employment. Despite their competence, years of experience, exposure and capacity, they still want to remain in paid employment perhaps due to fear and the uncertainties of what self-employment portend.

These guys over the years have worked very hard, learnt so much, they have made millions for their employers, and have effectively led teams and deliver on complex projects, yet, they are not eager to become owners and managers of their own businesses and enterprise.

A popular basis for starting a business especially in Africa today is for income and survival reasons. We go into business basically to make money, pay bills, sustain ourselves and our families and enjoy a life of comfort.

Half a century ago, this may make socio-economic sense but in today's world, there is more to business than just making money. The world today has become a very exciting and complex system. If your sole motive for starting any business is just to make money to pay your bills, you'll soon run out of business and become a victim of this modern system.

You see, global interactive and relationship methods have changed remarkably such that anyone can access any product in the world and pay for it immediately thanks to the invention and development of ICT. Competition therefore is not just about the shop next door, it has become global.

Which implies your ability to start, grow and manage your business successfully is beyond just supplying goods and services, it's about satisfying your customers and keeping them loyal to you and your brand – giving them no reason to shift to competitors either home or abroad.

SMART BUSINESS SERIES - NEVER STOP LEARNING

Success in business, growth in business and dominance in business cannot be separated from the art of continuous learning. Many people start a business with a clear picture and understanding of what they want to sell, who they want to sell to and how they want to sell to them. Their understanding of course would help them get off on a right note, but based on the fact that life and of course the market and people are dynamic, the knowledge that worked and won yesterday may fail woefully today.

The criticality of appropriate timing in your business and your life. It's just a charge for you to be on time and not be late in business and in life.

Life is actually a race against time. It is a contest for you and by you, against time with stakes such as success, riches, value creation, accomplishments and fulfilment.

For all of us, we get distracted once in a while by other racers, mistaking them as fellow contestants. We think were in competition against others hence, we keep running and chasing and hustling using other racers as our benchmark for success, instead of our personal dreams, goals, ambitions and visions.

I'll always say to people in seminars and trainings to think back 10 years, 20 years and even further; where are all the people we had in our lives as friends, class mates, colleagues and in general competitors? 99% of them may no longer in our lives.

Many of us keep working hard daily and hardly have much to show for it. We wake up very early and hit the road, running back and forth in pursuit of so many things and by the end of the month or even a year, you really haven't achieved much. We could chose to blame it on anything or anybody but have you really considered why others are achieving rather easily what you struggle to achieve? I mean these other people may not be as smart, as energetic, as hardworking or even qualified but they have great results.

I can almost hear you think it that it's because Perhaps your challenge is that you're working hard instead of working right.

Hard work is one thing, right work is another entirely different concept.

A couple of years ago I was in the office of a former colleague back in the days of paid employment. He looked at me and began to commend me and congratulate me on how much progress I've made and how much success I've recorded after I exited paid employment to establish my own  company.

He looked at me and said to me, Muyiwa you've tried, you've done very well and sincerely I wish I were in your shoes but I can never do what you did. I was a bit surprised and I asked him why and he said to me, he couldn't stand rejection. He could not imagine going from office to office, from place to place begging people for business, patronage or contracts. He couldn't stand the experience of been kept waiting for hours just to see someone he's probably older than so as to present a proposal and eventually be turned down.

Every business including yours has got the potential to become a multibillion naira business.

Many are actually of the opinion that the kind of business you're into will determine your revenue. But the truth is the number of customers you have and their frequency of purchase would determine your real income and how rich your business would become at the end of the day.

A typical example is this, if you're into car sales and you sell five cars in a month and generate a total revenue of about 15 million naira, and I am into the sales and distribution of noodles or bottled water and I'm able to sell a million cartons a month at 2,500 naira a carton, My revenue is 25 million naira
